A4ID has established physical presence in Africa through A4ID Africa which is based in Nairobi, Kenya. It is creating strategic partnerships to build a strong network of legal and development organisations that align with A4ID's objectives within the region.

A4ID Africa’s Aims

A4ID Africa has established strategic collaborations with national and regional bar associations, leading law firms, legal departments of leading corporations, departments of justice, UN Agencies, and other thematic leading organisations in A4ID’s key areas of focus in Africa, including:

  • Building capacity of legal professionals in area of Responsible Business
  • Promoting a Unified Culture of Pro Bono Legal Services
  • Strengthening Rule of Law and Improving Access to Justice

Programmes

Business and Human Rights e-Learning Course

A4ID has partnered with the Danish Institute for Human Rights to create and implement a Business and Human Rights (BHR) e-Learning Course, with an aim to train commercial lawyers and in-house counsel in East Africa in the area of Responsible Business.

Legal Pro Bono Rwanda

A4ID has partnered with Legal Aid Forum Rwanda to deliver the Legal Pro Bono Rwanda (LPBR) programme, supported through Clifford Chance’s Cornerstone Initiative. The programme aims to ensure access to free legal support for the poorest and most vulnerable people and communities in Kigali, Rwanda. The LPBR Programme is implemented in collaboration with three civil society organisations: Human Rights First Rwanda Association; ARDHO – Association Rwandaise pour la Défense des Droits de l’Homme; and HAGURUKA.

KAZA Legal Expert Network Project

The KAZA Legal Expert Network Project aims to build a network of legal experts across the Kavango-Zambesi (KAZA) region in Southern Africa, encompassing prosecutors and magistrates to better tackle the battle against the Illegal Wildlife Trade. The network wants to share and promote best practices for legal experts in KAZA, including capacity building for the network members. This project is managed by A4ID’s ROLE UK Programme.

Partnerships

East Africa Law Society (EALS)

A4ID has collaborated with EALS to deliver the largest Responsible Business Capacity-Building programme to commercial lawyers in the region. Through EALS, A4ID has worked with regional law societies in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. A4ID is currently working with EALS to build a strong culture of pro bono in the region and to promote the role of legal professionals in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Rwanda Bar Association (RBA)

A4ID has collaborated with the Rwanda Bar Association to collaborate promote high quality legal pro bono services amongst legal practitioners in Rwanda by working on joint initiatives, including pro bono roundtables, capacity-building training programmes, and research on the landscape of pro bono in Rwanda.

Certa Foundation

A4ID has collaborated with Certa Foundation to promote a culture of pro bono amongst law students and junior lawyers, to establish new pro bono and rule of projects in Rwanda, and work together to create awareness and offer training on Business and Human Rights.
